Synopsis – DEATH UNDER THE SKIN Roya, aged twelve, is sleeping at home, unaware of what is to come. She does not yet know that the jirga has sealed her fate due to the photograph in which she is smiling at a boy. Nor does she know that, because of this, her father and the men of the family are planning to execute her. In the middle of the night, her mother wakes her in a panic and urges her to flee through the window, before being killed herself by her husband. Before she dies, she sends a strange text message to the Afghan Ministry of Agriculture. A text message that will turn out to be a distress signal. Pursued through the Afghan mountains by her brother and cousin, who are armed with knives, Roya takes refuge with an old shepherd. The shepherd’s dog attacks the two boys and kills them. The shepherd, with his pigeon perched on his shoulder, hides the girl in a cave where he keeps some provisions. Roya is suffering from pain under her armpit, the cause of which she does not know. In
