SELF-GUIDED THE PALACE OF THE KINGS OF MAJORCA TOUR MAP Historical The palace, originally known as the royal castle of Perpignan, was built in the last third of the 13th century to host the Catalan king of Majorca and his court. Built on top of a hill located south of the town, the monument stands around a large courtyard, protected by a wide ditch. On its front side, a fortified strip leads to the entrance. At the end of the Middle Ages, the royal castle is turned into an arsenal facility. In the 16th century, following the unification of the Iberic Peninsula kingdoms, Spanish king Felipe the 2nd orders the construction of a citadel to reinforce the Perpignan stronghold controlling the border with the French kingdom. The six-pointed star shaped fortified citadel surrounds the medieval palace. It has remained intact till this day.
