FINDING MARJORIE WEST 1 CHAPTER ONE Mother’s Day 1938 Dorothea came skipping into view with a handful of freshly picked vilolets. Cecilia West and her friend, Helen Ackerlind, were unpacking the trunk of the car. They had already spread three large quilts on the ground in the clearing where the car was parked, and were preparing to put out the picnic dinner they made earlier that day. It was Mother’s Day, May 8, 1938 and it was one of those rare perfect spring afternoons in the hills of Northwestern Pennsylvania. Cecilia smiled as her eleven- year-old daughter approached. “Happy Mother’s Day,” Dorothea said as she gave her mother the bouquet. Cecilia beamed as she took the flowers from the girl. “Marjorie is going to bring you a bouquet, too,” she said to Helen. “Only it will be a bouquet of violet heads,” she laughed.
