ESPACE ARCHÉOLOGIQUE DÉPARTEMENTAL In the commune of Gages-Montrozier lies a site used by humans for MONTROZIER several millennia. The Roquemissou rock shelter is nestled against AVEYRON a cliff separating the Causse Comtal from Lévézou, and contains a rare and fascinating archaeological record of our past. The site was studied between 1982 and 1991 by Gaston-Bernard A JOURNEY INTO THE PREHISTORY OF THE CAUSSE Arnal and has been excavated since 2012 by Thomas Perrin, archaeologist and researcher at the cnrs in Toulouse. Roquemissou has recorded recurrent comings and goings of humans, with alternating phases of occupation and abandonment from the Final Palaeolithic (12 000 – 9 000 bc) to the end of the Neolithic (2 200 bc). This prehistoric shelter thus provides exceptional evidence of the last inland hunter-gatherers and the first farmers ROQUEMISSOU from the Mediterranean coasts.
