Summary of the Canehill, Arkansas Multiple Resource Area Nomination The Canehill Multiple Resource Area documents the historical, architectural, and archeological significance of Canehill, an unincorporated rural community in Washington County, Arkansas. Settled in 1827–1828, Canehill is among the county’s oldest communities and played a notable role in the religious, educational, agricultural, and commercial development of Northwest Arkansas throughout the nineteenth century. Founded largely by Cumberland Presbyterians migrating from Tennessee via earlier Arkansas settlements, Canehill quickly became a center for religion and education. The Cumberland Presbyterian Church organized one of the region’s earliest congregations, and in 1834 established the Canehill School, the first formal educational institution in Northwest Arkansas.
