An overhung centrifugal pump is one of the most common types of industrial equipment: water supply, heating, chemical production, the food industry, irrigation. The simplicity of its design — an impeller mounted on an overhung shaft, installed in a volute casing — makes such a pump reliable and low-maintenance. But this very simplicity is often what fails: disturb the conditions on the suction side, and a pump that just moments ago ran quietly and smoothly begins to "fire" with a characteristic crackling noise, lose performance, and deteriorate from within.
