155 Nerves of the Neck Nerves of the Neck - Facial nerve. - Lower four cranial nerves: glossopharyngeal, vagus, accessory and hypoglossal nerves. - Cervical part of sympathetic chain. - Ansa Cervicalis. - Pharyngeal plexus. Facial nerve - It is named facial as it supplies the muscles of facial expression. - It is a mixed nerve composed of both the sensory and motor fibres, but predominantly motor. - Origin: - From the pons by three nuclei: Motor nucleus of facial: supplies muscles of facial expression. Parasympathetic nucleus (superior salivary nucleus): supplies - Great superficial petrosal nerve → relay in “pterygo-palatine ganglion” supplying lacrimal, nasal, palatine and pharyngeal glands. - Chorda tympani nerve → relay in “submandibular ganglion “ supplying submandibular and sublingual glands. 3-Solitary nucleus (sensory ): - Lies in the dorso-lateral aspect of medulla. - It supplies taste sensation to the anterior 2/3 of the tongue.
