CFP Activism_heritage in the post-communist world Eastern Europe_EAHN My contribution addresses the particular case of the Hotel Roman, in Baile Herculane, Romania. Located in a splendid natural context, renowned for its sulfurous thermal springs waters with curative qualities, this hotel with its elegant brutalist composition is part of both a territory and Romanian history. Indeed, this hotel (formerly a sanatorium) built by architects Sulamita Mureșan and Aurel Mureșan in 1976, is in our opinion a true bastion of Romanian popular identity. It is located on the ancient site of the Baths of Hercules (“therme herculi”, 102AD). The spa, accessible from the ground floor of the hotel, is directly supplied by one of the region's natural sulfurous water sources. Because of its ancient location, its modern project, its complex typology, its raw materiality, the Hotel Roman is a real borderline case that is very interesting to study from the point of view of heritage preservation.
