*The Border Had No Wall* is a literary novel inspired by the 2016–2017 Gambian political crisis. It follows families who leave The Gambia for Senegal amid uncertainty, fear and rumours, and explores the solidarity of Senegalese communities who receive them, the dedication of humanitarian volunteers, and the difficult journey back home.
Through the story of Mariam Jallow and those she meets along the road, the novel examines **displacement, hospitality, dignity, humanitarian action, memory and return**, showing how a political crisis can transform ordinary lives even before violence occurs.
