Constantino Miguélez Peña CYBER-PHYSICAL APPROACH ON THE TRACKING OF BIOMEDICAL SAMPLES MSc. Smart Systems Integration Clinical laboratories process large volumes of sample test tubes during routine diagnostics. Traditional sample registration and tracking methods rely heavily on human interaction, making them inefficient and error-prone. This thesis presents a Cyber-Physical Laboratory Information Management System that automates the digital registration and tracking of biomedical samples within a clinical laboratory. Samples are identified using RFID-labelled test tubes and containers. RFID readers distributed across the laboratory track sample status and movement between workstations. Data is transmitted via XBee wireless communication to Intel Edison Computer-on-Modules, which manage operations across a distributed database hosted on local and remote servers, providing redundancy and failover protection.
