n Côte d'Ivoire, the world's leading cocoa producer, smallholders face major challenges: unstable incomes, fluctuating bean quality and limited access to processing infrastructure. It is against this backdrop that an innovative partnership was formed between Rikolto, Puratos, and the CAFUGO, SCAMED and CAYAT cooperatives, with the support of Enabel. The aim? To improve producers' incomes while guaranteeing high-quality cocoa, through the construction of fermentation and drying centres managed directly by the cooperatives. Two 150-tonne centres were set up in Sassandra and Vavoua, followed by a 1,000-tonne centre in Adzopé, run by the CAYAT cooperative. These facilities have transformed agricultural practices: producers have been trained in more rigorous harvesting and post-harvest techniques, and a fermentation protocol has been established to guarantee consistent quality.
