The Miracle of the Roses A short play based on the Portuguese legend of Queen Isabel Characters  Narrator  Queen Isabel  King Dinis  Poor Woman  Soldier 1  Soldier 2 Scene 1 – Outside the Castle (The Queen is walking with a basket hidden under her cloak.) Narrator: Long ago, in Portugal, there lived a kind queen called Isabel. She loved to help the poor, even when her husband, King Dinis, did not agree. (The Queen meets a Poor Woman.) Poor Woman: My Queen, I have no food. My children are hungry. Queen Isabel: Do not worry. God teaches us to share. (Takes bread from the basket and gives it to her.) Here, take this.
