The Art World: Reimagining the Third Place is a publication grounded in the concept of “third place" introduced by the sociologist Ray Oldenburg in 1989. A third place, as he said, is the anchor of community life and a public gathering place outside of home (first place) and work (second place), where people regularly meet for social interaction. Third places are the heart of a community’s social vitality. Historically, third places have taken the form of cafés, pubs, corner bistros, libraries—places that are neutral and for the public, where people gather and enjoy the company and conversations around them.
Despite the fact that arts institutions increasingly aim to be accessible to the public—perhaps in a similar pursuit of becoming a third place—the traditional third place concept does not fully apply since it did not account for the structural intricacies of arts institutions, where certain barriers still persist.
