I wrote this in the mid 1980s, and only minor stylistic amendments have been made since. This is a purely fictional account of events set in the early stages of Anglo-Saxon England, which suggests a way in which the Germanic immigrants may have achieved entry into post-Roman Britain. It shows how a young man, inherently unsuited to a roving life, nonetheless undertakes it, and what befalls him in his quest. The title effectively means 'what happened to Esla' (Esla being his name). It is suitable for young adults in particular, but can be read by all ages over, say, 14.
