Theodore was born in Tarsus but achieved fame and recognition in his role as the last overseas-born Archbishop of Canterbury. He was appointed aged sixty-six, and served until he died at eighty-eight. He established a unified English church spanning several kingdoms of the seventh century, and, according to Bede, did more to establish the English church than any other person.
