The Week in News Mr. Trump vs Maduro The U.S. has deployed warships and personnel off the Venezuelan coast, as former President Trump intensifies his push to use the military against cartels he blames for fueling America’s fentanyl crisis and gang-related violence. Earlier this year, Trump designated Venezuela’s Tren de Aragua, El Salvador’s MS-13, and six Mexican groups as foreign terrorist organizations, while also expanding immigration enforcement against alleged gang members. Caracas has largely rejected Washington’s accusations. Venezuela’s Foreign Minister Yvan Gil dismissed the charges as political theater, while President Nicolás Maduro accused the U.S. of raising threats against his country. In response, Maduro announced the mobilization of more than 4.5 million militia members nationwide — a force originally created by Hugo Chávez to back the armed forces against external and internal attacks.
