Chapter 23 – Pointing at trains, going up mountains I first became involved in Birmingham Phab Camps in 1982, I was 21 years old and had just qualified as a nurse at Dudley Road Hospital (now called City Hospital). It was summer and I was taking a bit of time off from nursing having completed my training and was doing voluntary work on a play scheme at Hockley Port. I received a call from an old friend from Harborne, Dave Brown who told me about Phab Camps and the fact that they needed to find qualified nurses to go on the camps for children. In particular they needed a nurse at short notice for something called the Multi Handicapped Camp. This sounded like it was a role demanding more specialist knowledge and proficiency than I had. My experience of working with disabled children was limited and agreeing to be responsible for the medical support of some 12 children with profound levels of impairment, far away from the comfort zone of a well-equipped clinical or special educational env
