Chapter 55 – It’s not the Cough that carries you off In January 2020, news reports began to appear about the emergence of a highly infectious virus called coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 which rapidly resulted in a global pandemic known as COVID-19. In March that year the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a global health emergency – as one country and then one continent after another fell under the dark shadow of what felt like a raging global apocalypse of sickness and death. The beginning of the pandemic not just coincided with the start of our two European projects, but had an unprecedented impact on the Carers Hub, on the wider organisation and it is fair to say on the whole world. In fact, the word ‘unprecedented’ itself became part of common parlance in every aspect of personal, professional and political life for the next two or more years. “Well, we are living in unprecedented times” became the response to tricky situations and decision making, that and “it’s just surreal”.
