Chapter 11 – (Remember the Days of the Old) School Yard On 21st July 1969, Commander Neil Armstrong and Lunar Module Pilot Buzz Aldrin stepped from the Apollo Lunar Module Eagle (part of the Apollo 11 spaceflight), to become the first humans to walk on the Moon’s surface. Their grainy images were broadcast live to the earth, as they bounced around the Moon collecting 47.5 pounds of rock and exploring the landing site they had named Tranquillity Base. Armstrong’s famous first words after climbing down off the ladder from the Eagle were “one small step for a man, but a giant leap for mankind”. Two and a quarter hours later they returned to the Command Module Columbia which was in lunar orbit, to be welcomed safely back by pilot Michael Collins, and then the three American astronauts headed for home.
