Chapter 16 – We are the Mods “We are the Mods, we are the Mods, We are, we are, we are the Mods” This was the battle-cry bellowed at ear splitting pitch every Saturday night by two or three hundred young men and women dressed in Parka coats, desert boots or tassel loafers and thin black ties with arrow motifs, the young women in retro chequered dresses, flat shoes or two-tone suits with pork-pie hats, or jeans and monkey boots, as we jumped, jerked and threw ourselves around the packed basement dance floor of the Romulus night club on Hagley Road in Edgbaston or Fewtrell’s Cedar Club in town throughout the very late 1970s and very early 1980s. Our chant had come from the movie Quadrophenia – a film made in 1979 but set in 1964 with a story inspired by the concept album of the same name by the band The Who.
