1 Chapter 1 Everie Dreams and depravity are not so different. I often gazed upon the radiant stars in the clear, night sky reflected from the glossy eyes of my tattered Victorian doll. On my canopy bed, sheets draped in bamboo fabric hemmed with mauve lace, I studied the white, shimmering specks from her eyes, rather than directly from the source. How could the eyes of an inanimate have more life than a living one can? I pondered this for quite a while. The only time I had seen eyes as cheerful as hers was when my mother was around. By around, I do not mean die, of course. She would never leave me nor die, no. She pinky promised me when I was little that she was immortal. Though, I’m sure it was a lie. Nothing lives forever.
