About Haiku for Peace
We launched the Kyoto Haiku Project website in August 2020 in hopes of overcoming the
pandemic together by celebrating the preciousness of life with haiku lovers worldwide.
When the Russian military invasion of Ukraine began in February of this year, we
started gathering submissions under the theme of “Haiku for Peace” in March. Haiku
poets and haiku lovers active on the frontlines of various fields around the globe have
sent us haiku wishing for peace in many languages. We have been publishing those
submissions on our website and on social media to give people a chance to think about
the people suffering from conflicts.
By May 27th, the project had received 460 poems from 44 countries and regions.
We also received a submission that contained a message from a Russian haiku lover as
well as 14 haiku from a woman who has been staying in a bomb shelter in Ukraine since
the invasion began.
