As the mandate for lifelong, self-directed learning becomes more widely understood, the urgent need for expanded understanding of the conceptualization and implementation of this construct becomes more evident. In the opening article, Carré and Cosnefroy present a carefully-researched analysis comparing the closely-related constructs of self-directed learning and self-regulated learning and suggest that proponents and researchers in these areas have much to learn from each other—an article likely to spark a great deal of healthy discussion and research.
