This document considers the calculation of vertical seismic profiling (VSP) wavefields for viscoelastic-medium models and the solution of inverse dynamic problems for recovering the parameters of these media. It describes the input and output data of these problems, as well as the SEG-Y files containing these data. The open materials comprise this PDF file and the SEG-Y files.
Unlike full-waveform inversion (FWI), in which parameters are recovered by globally and iteratively matching calculated and observed seismograms, the medium parameters considered here—the elastic modulus and the relaxation time—are determined directly from derivatives of the recorded wavefield.
The inverse problem is solved in two stages. The elastic modulus is determined at the first stage, and the stress relaxation time is determined at the second stage. The preprint (Gritsenko, 2026), which provides the theoretical basis for the calculations presented here, shows that this separation follows from the solutio
