Harmonics are produced by overblowing, but we aim to do this in a refined way by picking out the individual upper partials of a single fingering. Benefits: harmonics strengthen the embouchure, improve upper register and articulation of quiet attacks, and they help to familiarize one with "natural" tuning. Applications: to open up the sound, achieve maximum resonance for third-octave very rapid passages, use harmonic fingerings for ease.
