The Brussels City Museum is dedicated to the history of Brussels in all its aspects: applied arts, urban development, politics and economic history and folklore. This guide discusses the first
floor of the Museum. Here are displayed paintings, engravings, maps, plans and photographs
that show what the city once looked like.
The guide provides an explanation of Brussels’ urban development, with pieces from the
Museum collection as a starting point. While the general structure is chronological, quarters,
districts or buildings are in each case discussed within broader historical periods. There are also a number of references in the text to the current urban-development context.
