The theme of Issue 2 is “The Foundation of the AI Era: Strengthening Programming Education in Hong Kong Primary and Secondary Schools” As the AI era unfolds rapidly, the Hong Kong government is proactively investing in artificial intelligence research, infrastructure, and digital education in primary and secondary schools. This undoubtedly lays an important foundation for future development. However, whether the supporting measures at the foundational education level are fully adequate to enhance students' competitiveness in the AI age remains a question worthy of careful consideration. This article focuses on programming education as the bedrock of AI research and development, examining the current arrangements for related curricula in Hong Kong schools. It draws on experiences from mainland China, the United Kingdom, the United States, and elsewhere, analysing differences with common international practices, and offers some suggestions for reference.
