His ideas were based on the study of matter and energy and the relationships between them. He is best known for his theory of relativity, which holds that measurements of Space and time vary according to conditions, such as the state of movement of the observer. 2-3 Albert Einstein was born on March 14, 1879 in Ulm, Germany, but he grew up and obtained his early education in Munich, Germany. Einstein's formal secondary education ended at age sixteen. Einstein applied to enter the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, Switzerland, but his knowledge of subjects other than mathematics was not up to scratch, and he had not passed the entrance exam. Following the director's advice, he obtained his diploma for the first time at the Cantonal School in Aarau, Switzerland, and in 1896 was automatically admitted to the FIT.
