GREEN TOUR HISTORIC CENTER (1:00) Clamecy, located at the gates of the Morvan, is mentioned for the first time in 635 as Clamciacum. At that time, monks settled on the rocky spur protected by the Yonne and the Beuvron and drained the surrounding marshy lands. You are standing between two highly characteristic medieval houses (16th century, listed as Historic Monuments - IMH): featuring timber framing and jettied upper floors. All the materials used are of local origin. Rue de la Monnaie has long served as a link between the upper and the lower town. The building at 7 Rue de la Monnaie (15th century): its cellars housed a workshop for minting the Counts of Nevers' private coinage - a workshop believed to have operated until the mid-14th century. Note the carved beam above the doorway, featuring a central escutcheon - likely the coat of arms of the Count of Nevers - flanked by two open wolf's mouths.
