THE COMPETITION SITUATION (ÉPÉE FENCING) SICARD Michel Competition is and must be a goal for all fencers who wants to reach sports excellence. Training is just a way to get ready to fence and achieve sports successes. Most of the time, training models organizing the sportsmen daily life and aiming at fostering the emergence of performance, are based on the history of the sport itself. This culture is transmitted by theoretical models taught during training sessions. Reflections on training mainly deal with psychology, physiology, biomechanics. The primary focus is to identify the factors that will optimize performance. Training models are useful to set out training contents and athletic condition stages. However, performance cannot be foreseen. It must be built throughout the training that leads the sportsman to competition and to performance or failure regarding sports results. It seems important to me to revisit our way of thinking by trying to understand what a competition situation
