The combination of different size wire used in manufacture means they vibrate at varying frequencies producing a self-cleaning surface. Also, due to their flat surface (no knuckles) self cleaning screens use a smaller wire diameter than woven wire for certain applications. Therefore has a greater opening area percentage but lasts as long as normal square woven mesh.
