In our conception of the world, nature, including the ocean, is part of a harmonious, holistic whole,
where the elements of the visible world (animals, plants, humans, rain, mountains, etc.) and those of
an invisible world of imagination and spirituality coexist.
This extensive nexus is in motion, spanned by many relationship pathways between the land,
the sea, the sky and the spirit world. All these elements, living and non- living, visible and invisible,
are interdependent on each other and live in harmony. We form a ‘Whole’, in a holistic and
multidimensional conception of nature.
The ocean, in particulier, has various dimensions. It is sacred, because it is the cradle of life and
harbours the land of our ancestors. It is also a larder where communities fi nd their sustenance and
the gifts they give to others. It creates the bond between the clans: each has a specifi c role to play,
watches over its area of responsibility and interacts with the others to maintain the balan
