In 1677, superstar composer and holder of the opera monopoly Jean-Baptiste Lully was forced to stop working with librettist Philippe Quinault, who had unwisely represented the tiff between two of Louis XIV’s mistresses in the opera Isis. In need of a new project, Lully quickly reworked his early Psyché, which had been a collaboration with Molière, commissioning a new text from Thomas Corneille.
