Waratah is an Aboriginal word meaning “a tree with red flowers”. Scottish-born naturalist Robert Brown ( 1773 –1858 ) named this genus and species in 1810 after collecting specimens in the Blue Mountains and beside the Clyde and Hunter Rivers in New South Wales. Waratah has been New South Wales’ floral emblem since 24 October 1962. People in New South Wales are so proud of their majestic red flower that they have named the State rugby team the Waratahs. Waratah Day is on 26 September.
