FUNGAL INFECTION After the completion of the first bio essay we infected a culture with a filamentous fungus. We noted that it had grown filaments in all directions and searching the Internet, we discovered that it could be metschnikowia bicuspidata, due to its appearance and because it parasitizes daphnias, but we weren´t completely sure. We isolated all daphnias in the small aquarium and put them under a treatment to eliminate fungi. First we intended to use a fungicide on the type of mycostatin but then we decided to use formalin, which aquarists usually use when their fish are infected with fungus. The recommended dose is 0,025 ml/l and, as our aquarium was 5 litres, we added 0,125 ml and we got a good result: After 24 h of treatment they showed no signs of the disease. As they were badly infected, we repeated the treatment during one week. We were able to observe that the formalin did not kill the daphnias, but it killed fungi.
