Codes and Conventions of Magazines Masthead – This is the title of the magazine; this piece of text must be prominent in order to attract the attention of audiences. Plug – this is text which is displayed on the cover and mentions what stories will be covered in the magazine issue. Strapline – subheading (giving slightly more information than the main heading above it). Skyline – text that is displayed across the top of the cover. Banner – text that is displayed along the bottom of the cover. Menu – the list of contents inside the magazine. Tag – categorizing the reader’s interest in a particular story by using a certain word or phrase to captivate them, for example; exclusive, sensational, new. Pugs – these are well placed on the cover in order to catch the reader’s eye. A pug is the top left hand and right-hand corner of a magazine.
