Children Learning English as a Foreign Language CLIL: Content and Language Integrated Learning BY DIANE PINKLEY EFL AUTHOR FOR PEARSON LONGMAN ■ CLIL: A Definition In the last few years, there has been increasing interest in the instructional approach known as Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL). The acronym itself was first used by David Marsh, University of Jyväskylä, Finland, in 1994, and explained as follows: “CLIL refers to situations where subjects, or parts of subjects, are taught through a foreign language with dual-focused aims, namely the learning of content and the simultaneous learning of a foreign language.” ■ CLIL: Dimensions and Focus CLIL Compendium contributors (A.
