MAD the healthcare issue February 2019 m a ke a d i f f e re n c e m a g a z i n e Carlson ‘08 Saves a Life at Boxing Studio Katie Carlson ‘08, RN, clinical nurse in the Cardiothoracic/Transplant Intensive Care Unit at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, has punched, jabbed and hooked in boxing classes for the past three years as a form exercise. In what started out to be a normal class at noon on a Tuesday in late March, Carlson ended up performing CPR — the first time she’s done so outside of the hospital. Katie Carlson ‘08, RN, clinical nurse in About 10 minutes into the class, one of her classmates collapsed. “There weren’t many the Cardiothoracic/Transplant Intensive people in the class, but we could all tell something was wrong,” Carlson says. “He was Care Unit at Northwestern Memorial slurring his words and his breathing was irregular.” Eventually, Carlson could not find a Hospital in Chicago.
