Adopted by the Continental Congress, it announced that the 13 American colonies were severing political ties to Great Britain. Drafted primarily by Thomas Jefferson, it served as a moral, legal and political justification for the American Revolution. The Ashfield News invited Ashfield residents — young and old, of all persua- sions — to reflect on this day, this docu- ment, through the lens of their own lives. These are their essays.
