Easter in Ukraine Holidays (in Ukrainian: sviata) are very pleasant days, because these are days when people don’t have to work, but have an opportunity to relax, meet friends, say many pleasant words to each other and everybody is in a cheerful and merry mood. Easter Day (in Ukrainian: Pasha) comes according to the lunar calendar. Usually it is on Sunday (in Ukrainian: nedilia) in April (in Ukrainian: kviten’) or in May (in Ukrainian: traven’). By the way Easter is celebrated in Ukraine later than in other European countries. This year we’ll celebrate Easter on April, 28. Easter (in Ukrainian: ‘Velykden’ or ‘Paskha’) is preceded by seven weeks of Lent (in Ukrainian: pist). During this period many people don’t eat meat and animal products. The last Sunday before Easter is called Willow Sunday (in Ukrainian: Verbna nedilia). On this day pussy-willow branches (in Ukrainian: kotyky) are blessed in the church.
