Depression can be a major outcome in the retiring or ending of a career for elite athletes. This is due to them not being able to adapt to the ‘regular life’ that they are not used to. Multiple Olympic swimming champion Ian Thorpe and double Olympic Champion Dame Kelly Holmes are just a few of the high profile athletes who have made their depression public after their retirement from professional sport. Elite athletes train and compete for so many years and are not used to the life after their sporting career has ended. This can lead to many problems and bad choices that are made after an athlete’s sporting life.
