In the last 10 years, satellite navigation systems have changed the way users travel, but the real revolution in the industry occurred with the spread of smartphones (2,1 billion of smartphone users in 2016). As wireless technology continues to improve and wireless networks are ever more extensively deployed, the feasibility of developing Location-Based Services (LBS) has attracted growing interest.
This revolution, however, remains confined in outdoor environments: guidance services in open outdoor environments are easily implemented using Global Positioning System (GPS) technology, thanks to the presence of a strong signal between the user and the navigational satellite. On the other hand, GPS signals are unable to penetrate through building structures where the multiple reflections at surfaces cause multi-path propagation serving for uncontrollable errors: GPS is not suitable for indoor positioning.
