Omayra Sánchez Garzón was born on August 28th, 1972 and died on November 16th, 1985. She was a Colombian girl killed in Armero, department of Tolima, by the 1985 eruption of the Nevado Del Ruiz volcano when she was 13 years old. Imprisoned during three days and three nights into the water, between concrete blocks and other fragments, she draws the attention of the media as well as that of the voluntary workers. After sixty hours of agony, Omayra Sánchez dies. It is the French journalist Frank Fournier who photographs Omayra Sánchez shortly before his death. This image, spread all over the world after the death of the girl, pulls a debate because of the decision of the photographer to take this photo and the inactivity of the Colombian government to prevent the tragedy of Armero in spite of several preliminary warnings.
