Student-mentor relationships have always been a focus at BYU. The BYU Mission Statement explains that “Scholarly research and creative endeavor among both faculty and students . . . are essential and will be encouraged.” With the close of the current school year, many of our students who have participated in mentored research are graduating, moving on to graduate schools, furthered research, and careers. Time and time again we hear these students express how much the mentoring experience that they experienced at BYU has been a significant factor in their success. Over the past five years in the Mentored Research Program, more than 1,400 students have been awarded ORCA grants for original research projects and creative ideas. BYU undergraduate students have the unique experience of participating in research and one-on- one mentoring that undergraduate students at other universities normally do not experience.
