ST. JOHN OGITVIE lTtne most prominent Scottish marl¡rr of I tne Reformation was St. John Ogilvie, a Jesuit priest and convert to Catholicism. St. John was born to Calvinist parents in Banfshire, Scotland, around the year 1579. When he was thirteen, St. John was sent abroad by his parents in order to receive a French Calvinist education at Louvain, France. In France it was common for Catholic and Calvinist Scholars to debate religion, and while at school, St. John came to know the teachings of the Catholic Church. St. John was deeply impressed by how the Roman Catholic Church was comprised of all types of people. Kings, princes, peasants, and beggars could all renounce the world and devote their lives wholly to God. Furthermore, many of these people had given their lives as martyrs, a reality that had a tremendous influence on St. John Ogilvie. ln 1600 at the age of seventeen, St. John converted to Catholicism at Louvain.
