Athletics in France Athletics is a collection of sporting évents that involve compétitive running, jumping, throwing, and walking. The most common types of athletics compétitions are track and field, road running, cross country running, and race walking. The simplicity of the compétitions (we don’t need of expensive equiment) makes the most commonly completed sports in the world. In its early stages, as for the other sports, the athletics was practised only by the men. Gradually, the women put themselves in it; becoming aware of their growing importance in the society, in particular during the Great War, where they were obliged to make the work of the men left to the front. They participated in open competitions specially for them and, at the instigation of Alice Milliat in France, they were admitted for the first time in athletics in the Olympics of Amsterdam in 1928.
