T he BHS Spirit of the Plains Band is continuing the long standing tradition of being the best band around. The band was named Best in Class and Outstanding 3A Band at the Denver City Tumbleweed Marching Festival over the weekend. The band’s show performance is entitled “The Conquest of the Mayan Empire.” The music was written by Barry Hurt, longtime Texas high school band director and now the owner/operator of BH Music. Hurt writes marching music for all levels of high school bands, but prefers to focus on the smaller school bands. BHS Band Director Dusty Balderas stated, “It was a really good performance. Our feet have gotten better and better. We are really performing well and playing with much more energy and feeling.” Co-Captain and Drum Major Sydney Dennis stated, “I am really proud of how we have grown as a band.” The other Co-Captain and Drum Major Ashley Simental said of the performance, “It was really cool, because we proved to people that we are for real.” Band President Mor
