How Wind Socks are Made There are many different methods of making aviation quality wind socks but the best follow the same procedures and use mostly the same materials. High quality nylon is usually a starting material, which is then coated in urethane, a chemical compound which has three distinct subsets and uses, and protected from UV rays. Firstly, the use of high quality nylon as a base material is to ensure the durability and responsiveness of the windsock. Nylon is incredibly durable in the face of the elements and, quite importantly, doesn't become rigid or freeze during cold weather. This means that the wind sock will remain responsive and indicative of wind strength and direction even in the cold. Coating the material in urethane helps to keep it waterproof, durable and stops dirt from staining it so the colour stays bright.
