1st Quarter 2014 “Every sentence I utter must be understood not as affirmation but as a question.” -Niels Bohr The recent celebration of Mother’s Day brought a rush of memories for me. One of my favorites recalls the frequent and spirited talks that took place at the kitchen table over a pot of coffee. Long time readers know that my mother had great influence on my “thinking”. She didn’t judge the content of my opinions but was most interested in how I derived them. Mom valued inquiry based critical thought and despised the regurgitation of the ideas of others. She informed me upon my departure for college that if I didn’t come home with more questions than answers my tuition had been wasted. Most wisdom imparted by mothers to sons passes from ear to ear, rarely pausing in between to be absorbed by the brain. One evening we engaged in a conversation as we gulped coffee.
