For the 20112012 academic school year more than 40% of students who applied for an ORCA grant received funding. These funds enable student-mentor projects across all colleges and departments at BYU— with topics ranging from researching gene expression in laboratory animals to studying how different teaching techniques affect children’s behavior towards their peers with disabilities. One hundred forty-five faculty members also applied for funds to participate in collaborative studentmentor projects. Of those faculty members, 71 received as much as $20,000 in order to complete their proposed projects. These facultydriven mentored environmental grants range from evaluating international financial laws to mentoring students traveling to India this summer where they will be implementing a variety of nursing activities both at a rural children’s boarding school and in a community of leprosy-afflicted patients.
